چکیده

We present a framework to build a High Angular Resolution Diffusion Image (HARDI) Atlas based on a population of HARDIs from different subjects. The method relies on a non-linear group-wise registration algorithm as well as a set of tools to re-orient the gradient directions of individual subjects and re-interpolate their diffusion weighted signal in a canonical gradient direction set in atlas space. We test the technique on a population of forty six HARDIs acquired on a 3 Tesla scanner. Our experiments show that our atlas can capture information beyond that of a single tensor, even with the inherent smoothing effect of averaging many different brains together.

Using Automatic HARDI Feature Selection, Registration, and Atlas Building to Characterize the Neuroanatomy of Aβ Pathology

The detection of white matter microstructural changes using diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI) often involves extracting a small set of scalar features, such as fractional anisotropy (FA) and mean diffusivity (MD) in diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). With the advent of more advanced dMRI techniques, such as high angular resolution diffusion imaging (HARDI), a number of mathematically ins...

Diffusion weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DW-MRI), provides unique insight into the microstructure of neural white matter tissue, allowing researchers to more fully investigate white matter disorders. The abundance of clinical research projects incorporating DW-MRI into their acquisition protocols speaks to the value this information lends to the study of neurological disease. However, the...

White matter atlas generation using HARDI based automated parcellation

Most diffusion imaging studies have used subject registration to an atlas space for enhanced quantification of anatomy. However, standard diffusion tensor atlases lack information in regions of fiber crossing and are based on adult anatomy. The degree of error associated with applying these atlases to studies of children for example has not yet been estimated but may lead to suboptimal results....

Multi-Fascicle Model Reconstruction from Acquisitions at a Single b-value with a Population-Informed Prior

Purpose. Diffusion tensor images (DTI) have been widely used to characterize the white matter microstructure. The incapacity of DTI to represent crossing pathways has motivated the developement of novel diffusion models, such as the multi-tensor models. However, to estimate a multi-tensor model, one needs to acquire the diffusion weighted images (DWI) at multiple b-values, unlike the common sin...

Bayesian Estimation of White Matter Atlas from High Angular Resolution Diffusion Imaging

We present a Bayesian probabilistic model to estimate the brain white matter atlas from high angular resolution diffusion imaging (HARDI) data. This model incorporates a shape prior of the white matter anatomy and the likelihood of individual observed HARDI datasets. We first assume that the atlas is generated from a known hyperatlas through a flow of diffeomorphisms and its shape prior can be ...
